1.
Empress Of
Turn The Tide
A new track from Empress Of’s Save Me EP out today.
After ‘Save Me’ and ‘Dance For You’, ‘Turn The Tide’ features production from Jim E-Stack and is yet another example of how Lorely Rodriguez makes alt-pop music with big hooky smarts.
2.
Gorillaz, Thundercat
Cracker Island
Fresh from their Primavera Sound sets in Barcelona, Damon Albarn and friends are back with Thundercat on joint vocals and bass. The song alludes to cult communities and the virtual band “have relocated to Silverlake, California where it turns out that the answer to life’s question – the one truth to fix the world – is to invite fans to join ‘The Last Cult’, with Murdoc as its self-appointed Great Leader.”
Gorillaz play 3Arena Dublin on August 17th
Production comes from Greg Kurstin, Gorillaz and Remi Kabaka jr.
3.
Zaska, J Smith
Gone In A Minute
Zaska is back with his pal J Smith for this gorgeous slice of neo-soul about climate change. The song is to feature on his upcoming album A Better Way, out on UK label edbl recordings, to be released in the Autumn.
“It’s a song about how fragile and vulnerable Mother Nature is, and that if we’re not careful it’ll be gone. But it’s not all gloom and doom. There’s a positive message that we can get together and do something about turning it around.”
Max Zaska.
4.
Alela Diane
Paloma
Alela Diane is one of my favourite American folk voices, since the 2009 album To Be Still.
It’ll feature on her first album in six years
“‘Paloma’ was written down in Mexico during a violent thunderstorm that took out the power for a few days. It is a musing on the volatility of the systems we build, and the knowledge that nature always gets the last word.”
5.
Mura Masa, Shygirl, Channel Tres
Hollaback Bitch
Mura Masa continues his series of collaborative singles that have referenced 90s/2000s hits with this Gwen Stefani electro-slide with able vocalists for such an occasion Shygirl and Channel Tres. Bouncy. Pick of the bunch so far.
A new album demon time is due September 16 via Polydor.
6.
Stevie Appleby
Fires
There’s some lovely arrangements happening here on Stevie Appleby’s new song ‘Fires’, which grows this new solo project with a full band and shimmering vocals.

7.
I. Jordan
Always Been
I. Jordan (formerly India Jordan) is here to melt your mind on a big neon dance track that sounds like it’s trying to bring a cheesy 80s TV song undercover into the DJ booth.
About the name change, they say – “It felt heavy carrying around “India Jordan” when it really doesn’t resonate with me anymore.”
The artwork features a photo by El Hardwick, and is representative of this change, focusing on their hair, tattoos and an “J” signet ring Jordan gifted to themselves to celebrate the name change.
“As a trans person I’m forever changing. Being visible in the image without directly showing my face allowed me to avoid capturing something I might feel unconnected to in a few months time, but still shows off parts of my trans-ness”.
8.
Automatic
Teen Beat
You don’t need any more reasons to listen to LA new-wave post punk band Automatic’s second album Excess on Stones Throw today but ‘Teen Beat’ is a convincing argument.
9.
Gabe Gurnsey
You Remind Me
Following on from hard. synth electro pop of ‘Push’, ‘You Remind Me’ features the voice of Tilly Morris, once again on a propulsive night-drive.
The song is from the album Diablo out on Phantasy on September 9th.
10.
Hot Chip
Down (Sworn Virgins remix)
Sleazy electro merchants Sworn Virgins tackle Hot Chip’s recent single with their typical sass, while keeping the Universal Togetherness Band sample intact.
Hot Chip have a new album, their eighth, Freakout/Release out on August 19th.
Warmduscher’s Clams Baker is the vocalist with Sworn Virgins.
Two more remixes featuring Sheffield born artist Nyra (who adds an italo-disco hue) and Selector Dub Narcotic aka Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening(who adds a vocoder and slows the track).
