Welcome back to our mix series, Clubbing is Culture.
This is a series of four mixes all centred around a core theme of Irish cultural spaces and the increasing lack thereof. Recent closures, a lack of funding and the archaic licensing laws restricting social hubs are impacting the cultural fabric of Ireland and prevent Irish people from realising their creative potentials. Check out Give Us The Night for more information on the campaign to address this.We’ve invited some of Ireland’s most interesting DJs to respond to the topic of cultural spaces with a guest mix and written contribution. So far, we’ve had mixes from Club Comfort’s Roo Honeychild, Variant Crew’s Falx and Nihilist and Michelle Doyle aka Rising Damp.
This time, we’re joined by Laura O’Connell, more commonly known as DJ and Gash Collective honcho, Lolz.
From the outset I wanted this mix to showcase the wealth of creativity and talent in Ireland and the sense of community that goes along with this. I wanted it to show that despite the archaic licensing laws and lack of cultural spaces for gigs the Electronic music scene here has never been stronger. At nearly 2 hours long this mix contains a diverse range of released and unreleased material from up-and-coming as well as more established Irish producers. It moves from ambient and experimental to more club orientated tracks, and tries to capture both the uncertainty of now as well as hopefulness for the future.
It goes without saying that this pandemic will have a huge and lasting effect on our scene as we knew it. A recession is inevitable and unfortunately, this will hit our, already sparse, club spaces hard. Lack of infrastructure is nothing new in Ireland, promoters have always been looking for new spaces and innovative and creative ways to throw parties. As someone who spent most of their early 20s dancing through a recession, I’ve witnessed venue after venue close down, however, the music community has always remained. As a promoter I feel the scene needed a reset in some shape or form, and I’m hoping that when the dust settles we will see more of a focus on parties that amplify local artists. After all, it’s these parties that help build the music community and scene in the first place.
Now more than ever it is obvious just how important clubbing and dancing is to our culture, and although we are unsure of what is to come one thing is for certain- our scene will prevail and we will dance again!
