Why you need to see Lankum

The RTE Choice Music Prize – Irish Album of the Year 2023 Winner Lankum have just been announced as the winner of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year 2023 for the album 'False Lankum' (Rough Trade). They received a cheque for €10,000 - a prize which has been provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) - as well as a specially commissioned award. The jury panel of Irish music media professionals deliberated at length tonight and chose the album from the shortlist of 10 records released by Irish artists throughout 2023. The sold-out event in Vicar St, Dublin featured live performances by 8 of the album shortlisted acts. The event was hosted by 2FM’s Tracy Clifford and was broadcast live in a special broadcast on the station. TV highlights of the show can be seen on Thursday 14th March at 22.30 on RTÉ2 Information from Liza Geddes, Recode Publicity lizageddes@gmail.com No repro fee / photo: Graham Keogh http://www.choicemusicprize.ie http://2fm.rte.ie/ http://www.rte.ie/ http://twitter.com/choiceprize
Lankum won the Choice Music Prize for Irish album of the year in March.

There’s no denying that the fact that In The Meadows is the Dublin doom-trad-folk band Lankum‘s only Dublin show of 2024 makes this an extra tantalising bill.

The band’s headliner status at In The Meadows and their curatorial involvement is another sign of the four-piece’s growing influence, as is their nod for album of the year at this year’s Choice Music Prize for the widely celebrated False Lankum.

While the band’s albums are top tier releases, live, Lankum bring that dark dynamic to the stage, creating swelling low-end and rumbling drones that draws as much from metal as it does from the traditional Irish music songbook. Just listen to the band’s newest track, a live version of ‘Rocky Road To Dublin’ captured live in Dublin that features on the upcoming Live in Dublin album out on June 21st.

Scottish post-rockers Mogwai, English alternative rock band Black Country, New Road, Dublin folkie John Francis Flynn and English folk band This Is The Kit.

Mohammed Syfkhan

We took a deeper look at the lineup at the one-day Dublin folk and alternative festival a while back but as the day approaches, and since more acts have been added to the likes of Mogwai, Black Country New Road and This Is The Kit, here’s who else Nialler9 is particularly excited to see:

John Francis Flynn is doing wonders with traditional songs approached from a experimental perspective across two albums now, most recently Look Over The Wall, See The Sky, Flynn is a traditionalist operating with a exploratory lens, who is at ease at a trad session as he is on a big outdoor stage.

Cormac Begley is a master of the concertina, making the instrument heave and wheeze with a stunning low-end previously unheard of. A Begley set is a footstomping manifestation of ‘C’mon Ireland!’ in musical form.

Mohammed Syfkhan – the Leitrim-based Syrian artist’s music’s bright and energetic release, as heard on I Am Kurish, is filled with bouzouki, singing and music drawn from Middle Eastern and North Africa. He has collaborated with Martin Hayes, Cormac Begley and opened for Lankum in Cork last year.

Rachael Lavelle – The 2023 debut album Big Dreams made good on the artist’s long-standing promise with an ability to create unique liminal spaces for her off-kilter yearning compositions and engulfing majestic vocals, that nods to forebearers like Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and a contemporary like Weyes Blood.

Ana Palindrome

There’s a palpable Stereolab feel to ‘Sorry A Million’ a debut song from Ana Palindrome, who are the Cork-based trio of Niamh Dalton (vocals, fiddle – Trá Pháidín, The Bonk, Anna Mieke, Caoilian Sherlock and Mantu ), Ruairi de Búrca (synths, programming, Crying Loser, Trá Pháidín) and Sara Leslie (bass, vocals – Trá Pháidín & pôt-pot).
