The Icelandic band Sigur Rós have released their first song in nearly seven years. ‘Blóðberg’ is a near seven-minute song with sweeping orchestrals that neatly track with the band performing with a 41-piece orchestra at Royal Festival Hall, London, as part of Christine and the Queens’ Meltdown this Friday.
‘Blóðberg’ features the return of multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson, who left the band in 2012, along with remaining members Jónsi and bassist Georg Holm.
‘Blóðberg’ features the London Contemporary Orchestra conducted by Robert Ames, who will perform with them on European dates, while Ames and the Wordless Music Orchestra will join them on North America dates.
A longer music video by Johan Renck, who directed the HBO series Chernobyl along with music videos by Madonna, Robyn and Beyoncé, is also out and the director said:
“I feel as nihilistic as one could regarding the future. We are powerless against our own stupidities. Some aspects of this came to merge with my impressions of the themes of ‘Blóðberg’. The music becoming a score to my own miserable thoughts, giving them beauty as only music can.”
