Rachael Lavelle

Let Me Unlock Your Full Potential

As covered earlier this week, I doubt you’ll see a more perfect music video this month than this video by Bob Gallagher with art direction by Sarah Flanagan.

A good video is nothing without a great song, and ‘Let Me Unlock Your Full Potential’ is delightfully engaged in its world-building synths and strings crescendo and transportive vocals, spoken and sung, of Lavelle.

Lavelle is a singular talent, whose music isn’t a carbon copy of anyone else.

2.

Jorja Smith

Little Things x Gypsy Woman (L BEATS MASHUP)

A festival-ready mashup of Jorja Smith’s recent single ‘Little Things’ with Crystal Waters’ ‘Gypsy Woman’.

A trick also recently achieved by Mango x Mathman (RIP) and Melina Malone’s ‘Heartbreak & Promises’.

Nia Archives also did a great jungle-leaning remix this month.

The Chemical Brothers, Halo Maud

Live Again

After last week’s rescheduled Cork show, and news of a book Paused In Cosmic Reflection about the duo, The Chemical Brothers have released a new banger with vocals by Halo Maud.

Written by The Chemical Brothers’ press officer, Robin Turner, Paused In Cosmic Reflection will examine their 30-year career through the duo’s perspective as well as interviews with collaborators including Noel Gallagher, Beck, Beth Orton and Erol Alkan. The book also features archival photos across its 336 pages.

Grian Chatten

Bob’s Casino

The Fontaines D.C. frontman’s Dan Carey-produced solo album Chaos For The Fly is out today, and among it’s previously unheard highlights is the evocative ‘Bob’s Casino’ a song that features the dual vocal interplay of Chatten and his fiancée Georgie Jesson, a new thing to hear for the singer.

Of the album, Chatten said:” Thank you for riding this train with me. “Chaos For The Fly is a collection of songs that have lived within me for a while. I recoil at some of them because they reek of a rottenness that has sometimes grown in my soul. Some of them had me smiling well before I knew who they were. Some of them are dark alleys that I have only successfully cordoned off through the process of writing them.”

6.

Saoirse Miller

Resurrection

A beautifully understated electronic production underpins ‘Resurrection’, Dublin artist Saoirse Miller’s new song, which features production by Cheesemore.

Cooks But We’re Chefs

Secret Chord

Jazzy hip-hop 7-piece big band Cooks But We’re Chefs are marking a specific time in recent history, when the festivals and clubs came back after the big pause with this “hip-hop and dance track inspired by old school garage and house”.

It’s a song that attempts to capture the anticipation and excitement of returning to an unrestrained social life in clubs, fields and late at night.
