Meljoann is a perennial favourite and a reliable creator of wonky hyperpop and R&B music.
Having released the album office poltiics and anti-capitalist-themed themed album H.R in 2021, Meljoann pronounced Mel- Joe- Ann) has been releasing once-off tracks and collaborations with producer Zoid.
For Meljoann’s second single of 2023, after the bright reissued zinger ‘Fetishes’, the experimental pop producer turns her attention to the music industry, with an R&B slow jam about making a creative living in a capitalist world.
“Tired of your business and I’m tired of your crew / Sucking on diesel like it’s not up to you”.
The video was written, directed, edited and stars Meljoann.
“Broke is about your life under capitalism (probably), and less interestingly it’s about my life under the music industry. I appear naked in the video; to express openness, vulnerability, and as a sincere fuck-you to Big Tech’s distaste for the human body”.

lyrics
I don’t know what you want
Feels like I’m never enough for you
Because I’m burnt out
I’m a joke
I cost a lot
Use up your coke
And you walk round my house like you’re in love
You’re in love
Tired of your business and I’m
tired of your crew
Sucking on diesel like it’s
not up to you
I can’t win with ya
Wait to be done with ya
I can’t win with ya
Wait to be done with ya
You can’t give me what I need
Too high to ever really feed me
‘Cause I be washed up
On the shore
With a wave
Of applause
When I climbed ev’ry mountain that you bought
Not enough
I can’t win with ya
Wait to be done with ya
I can’t win with ya
Wait to be done with ya
Cause I’m broken
I’m broke again
I’m broken
Broke again
Broken
I’m broke again
We’re broken
We’re broke again
and again
