Album Of The Week: Brownswood Electr*c 2

Avatar

Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label releases a second compilation of electronic beat music which picks up where the first one left off in its main aim – providing bumping electronic funk instrumentals from up and coming producers who are bubbling under. The first compilation last June introduced us to Shlohmo, Letherette and featured tracks from Mount Kimbie and Pearson Sound. This time, you’ll be hard pressed to recognise any of these names: Ta-ku, Monky, Anenon, Frederic Robinson, Jus Wan, Jack Dixon, Stray.. but they are all bang on the money in terms of production and sonics.

It’s a compilation which highlights new producers making interesting new shapes inspired by the same old clay and most of them define their own brilliance through the knowledge of when a beat should drop or innovative arrangements. There are flashes of old school wobble (DJG’s ‘Automatic’) lifted by some killer bassline, there’s Hud Mo-esque g-funk (Ta-Ku’s ‘Hey Kids’), chillwave (Anenon’s ‘Shifts’) , AFX-esque drum and bass ambience (‘rederic Robinson’s ‘Mood Swings’), squelching electro-funk (Funk Ethic’s ‘Step In’) , 2step piano house (Jack Dixon’s ‘By My Side’) and everything in between. What Brownswood Electric 2 does so well is highlight that indefinable place between the different styles of electronic music. Pick it up.
