Cork producer JarJarJr has been steadily building a reputation online for himself over recent years. Despite having a relatively low-key persona within the Irish scene, the Cork man has garnered a major online following as part of the Soundcloud wave of bedroom producers racking up millions of plays with his chill-friendly brand of lo-fi hip-hop.
JarJarJr is an artist to get acquainted with as quickly as possible with features and praise from Indie Shuffle and Mass Appeal, production credits on Kojaque’s Deli Daydreams, a successful Splice sample pack and even his own dedicated Reddit board already under his belt. He has just released his RadioJuicy debut EP Free Parking on Sundays. After years of sample-heavy releases, the producer has released a project that moves away from reworking other pieces and towards building a unique sound from scratch.
On Bandcamp, JarJarJr says each track on the EP is “documenting the critical stages of thought that ensue following a heavy Saturday night”. Well, his Saturday night aftermath sounds a hell of a lot more pleasant than mine with Free Parking On Sundays serving up buttery synths, laid-back beats, mellow yet groovy basslines and some wonderful touches of jazz experimentation.
Artists who got their start in the lo-fi hip-hop bubble online often don’t work well outside of the structure of laidback casual listening but JarJarJr avoids this pitfall by moving away from the lo-fi that birthed him and combining it with organic instrumentation and a newly established distinct sound. Free Parking On Sundays is an exciting glimpse of what’s to come from one of Ireland’s most underrated artists.
