Friday was release day and here’s the first things that caught my ear while listening to new songs out.

See the New Music section for individual posts on tracks.

Phoebe Bridgers & Maggie Rogers – ‘Iris’

As well as a Copyright Killer version of ‘Kyoto’ this week, Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers have got together and recorded a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls’ ‘Iris’ to benefit Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight election in Georgia.

Sorcha Richardson – ‘The Starlight Lounge’

Sorcha Richardson follows up last year’s First Prize Bravery with a new song co-produced with James Vincent McMorrow, that treads similar lyrical territory to the album with more overt synth-pop textures making its way into the tune.

Sprints – ‘Manifesto’

From the Dublin band’s EP of the same name, ‘Manifesto’ continues the four-piece’s impressive run of Daniel Fox-assisted rock music. Buy the EP here.

Magazines – ‘Pink and Blue’

I would put Newdad, Sprints and now Magazines into a little box marked Best New Irish rock music 2020 after this week. We featured Magazines’ previous song on this week’s podcast but ‘Pink and Blue’ is arguably a better and more memorable song.

Billie Eilish – ‘Therefore I Am’

A new one from Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell.

Disclosure – ‘Fatoumata Diawara – Douha (Mali Mali)’ (Joe Goddard Remix)

The Vision – ‘Down’ featuring Dames Brown

Don’t sleep on this modern disco record from The Vision.

TSHA – ‘Renegade’ (feat. Ell Murphy)

From the Ninja Tune’s new Flowers EP out today.

Bonobo & Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – ‘6000 Ft.’

From the collaborative 12″ EP from the duo.

Thundercat – ‘Fair Chance (feat. Ty Dolla $ign & Lil B) [Floating Points Remix]’

Monjola – ‘Feels Right’

Another artist featured on this week’s podcast, the new Dublin R&B artist comes through with a standout.

Melina Malone – ‘Realize’

A new drop from Melina with a co-production from Steven McCann aka RVSTLESS.

‘Realize’ is a story that explores a toxic relationship between a man and woman, where the man is being the one observed and his actions criticised.

Melina says; “As women, we are constantly living our lives surrounded by the male gaze. As John Berger once noted, “Men ‘act’ and women ‘appear.’ Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at.” I wanted to invert this narrative in ‘Realize’, the song is entirely from the woman’s perspective and follows her journey in realizing the toxicity and manipulative behavior she has endured from the man, which is articulated in the first two verses. The song progresses and the narrative changes so that the woman is now addressing and uplifting other women who may feel that their worth is diminished because of how they have been treated. I want to emancipate and build up women who can relate to this story. The ultimate message of ‘Realize’ is that you are not defined by what happens to you, but by how you choose to respond..”
