A Lazarus Soul
The Dealers
A Lazarus Soul chiefly identify as a Dublin band. Their last album was called The D They Put Between the R & L, and their songs talk of the true Dublin working class.
Five years later, and the band’s album No Flowers Grow In Cement Gardens is released today, and features this beautiful stirring acoustic and string-arranged song about Dublin street traders Bridie and Tessie.
The pleasure of listening to the lyrics of these characters is a big part of the appeal, as is Brian Brannigan’s vocal.
Money for jam.
A Lazarus Soul’ Tickets upcoming gig dates are at Vicar Street in October, Coughlan’s in Cork and Cleere’s in Kilkenny.
Mabe Fratti
Kravitz
Guatemalan Mexico City-based avant-pop cellist and singer Mabe Fratti released her fourth album Sentir que no sabes last week.
Not previously an artist I had delved into, I was only familiar with the name from playing Foggy Notions’ Flotations last year.
‘Kraviz’ kicks off the record, a drama-charged horn and piano track of suspense that hooked me into the record.
Palmbomben II, Kid From Amazon
Boy I Can Dance
Dutch lo-fi house producer Palmbomen takes inspiration from Brazilian music scene, on his latest release Dancing & Crying: Brazil.
‘Boy I Can Dance’ is a pleasing tropical dance pop shuffle with vocals by Brazilian singer Kid From Amazon.
It’s reminding me of this Pional tune.
James Blake, Lil Yachty
Midnight
A 10-track collaborative album between the producer and rapper, Bad Cameo is at its best when Blake and Yachty are on the same page, as they are here on ‘Midnight’ with both artists providing vocals over a very James Blake spacious dubstep wub, which builds to a gorgeous synth spiral crescendo.
Bicep
Rola (Chroma 004)
Continuing their DJ-lead Chroma series around their summer festival live shows, Bicep’s ‘Rola’ is a mechanised UK club cut hits deep and low.
“We wanted something dark and heavy to play as our first tune, as a stark departure from the Live show. It’s exactly what we’re wanting to achieve with CHROMA, a track written for the dancefloor with a specific idea in mind. It’s a chance for us to stretch our legs outside a traditional album cycle and focus purely on music for us djing. It feels really refreshing for us to write music and play it out that same week. It’s been really fun for us to let people hear a bit of a tougher sound from us.”
Pearl & The Oysters
Side Quest
Pearl & The Oysters are the LA-based Parisian duo of Juliette Pearl Davis (Juju) and Joachim Polack (Jojo), whose bright and bubbly jazzy- indie pop tunes like the newest ‘Side Quest’, have been released on Stones Throw since 2023.
The song was written by Jojo, as a counter balance to real-life experience of dealing with a family illness.
Decarteret, 1000 Beasts
Pray For You
Clare artist Decarteret’s latest tune is a smooth and textured neo-soul track written with Cork producer 1000 Beasts, a real treat on headphones.
“I wrote this song at a pretty dismal part of my life back in 2022, and was so glad to work on it with Cian (1000 Beasts) as we brought it to life together. It carries the weight of an important arc of the story which will be told in ‘to the west’, my upcoming project.”
The video was shot in Mardyke Skate Park in Cork.
Decarteret (pronounced “Decarteray”) plays Ireland Music Week in October.
Desire
Dangerous Drug
Classic Italians Do It Better synth disco vibes from Desire here. You know what you are getting with Johnny Jewel’s label.
The Italo-noir flavoured Games People Play album is out October 2nd.
Rosie Lowe
In My Head
English producer and singer-songwriter Rosie Lowe’s ‘In My Head’ is a shuffling nu R&B style song, with guitar by Jamie Woon.
The refrain of “I was in my head, couldn’t get it out, be such a shame if I could be without” which serves as a mantra for the new album Lover, Other out August 16th via Blue Flowers.
“In My Head” is a song about feeling the change in life and trying to learn to just surrender to it and not overthink. It’s about digging deep to a place inside where I forge on anyway, despite my fears”‘
– Rosie Lowe
D*mp
don’tunderstandaword
Producer Ryan Dwyer aka D*mp’s latest is a woozy slice of AMSR electronica that works well alongside the work of John Glacier.
From the f2f EP of demos which Dwyer says “some slightly sadder spoken word and noises taken from my grandads piano back in Dublin, reworked into logic as an instrument and then these kind of sounds come out.”
